The Joffrey Ensemble Dancers

The GC&SU Division of Continuing Education and Public Services presents the Joffrey Ensemble Dancers on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. in Russell Auditorium.

“The Joffrey Ensemble is a very well-known name in the dance industry,” said Jeanne McHan, program coordinator of cultural events and courses.

The group includes dancers from Russia, Spain, Italy, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, China, Japan, Korea and the U.S. These twelve dancers are picked to participate in this group based on their talent and enthusiasm.

“I have worked with these dancers in the past. They have been guest artists at our production of ‘Nutcracker,’” said McHan. “This is their first full-scale performance here.”

The school was founded in 1952 and still remains at the top for their American Dance education and classical ballet training. The company will perform in four cities in Georgia during the month of Oct. They will perform in the Georgia Youth Ballet in Fayetteville, the Marietta Civic Center in Marietta, and the Gainesville Art Council in Gainesville.

The Artistic Director of the group, Elie Lazar, arranged the program for the ensemble. The program includes the new flamenco music in the ballet “Surrender 2 Love,” Mozart’s symphony number 33 for the contemporary ballet layers, and the classical t?te-?-t?te with music by Andres Messenger. These ballets will be joined by pas de deux from the ballets “Le Corsaire” and “Flames of Paris.” The Bedminster Fund, individuals and corporations provide funding for the dancers.

“I think that bringing these dancers to our campus is another way for our division to add to the cultural events at GC&SU,” said McHan. “Having a name like the Joffrey Ensemble Dancers brings a good reputation and prestige to GC&SU and our community.”

The Dancers will also teach a master class for intermediate and advanced students on Thursday, Oct. 11, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in Russell Auditorium.

The admission for the class is $25; dance teachers and others may audit the class for $10. They will also teach an advanced summer ballet camp this summer.

“It is a really unique opportunity for local citizens to see something they don’t get the chance to do,” said McHan.

“I’m looking forward to it,” said Norma Wall, registration specialist.

Devon Sheppard, a senior in the Dance Minor program, has worked with the dancers before.

“I think they are very talented dancers. The company has come a long way since the death of Joffrey, whom the company is named after,” said Sheppard. “We are very excited about the ‘montage’ that they are going to put on for us.”

The tickets for the performance cost $10 for adults, $7 for children 12 and under and $7 for GC&SU students with a valid ID. Anyone who supports this event is welcome to attend a special meet-the-artist reception after the performance by buying a ticket for $25. If you have any questions, please contact Jeanne McHan at 445-2756.
