Robinson looking for best year yet
David Robinson is looking to lead the way for Georgia College & State University’s golf team this year.
Robinson is a junior at GC&SU. Last year he led the Bobcats with a 74.93 stroke average in 12 events. He was named Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year. He was also listed as Third Team All-American his sophomore year.
Robinson attended two different high schools, Brentwood and Washington County High. He was MVP of the golf team for each year at each school. He was State runner-up for his last three years. He won his Regional Championship his junior and senior years.
He’s been playing golf since he was about ten. He started to play competitively when he was in the eighth grade.
During the US Amateur Qualifier last year in Athens, Robinson shot a 65. That round propelled him into the National Amateur Tournament. In college tournaments, he has shot a few impressive rounds of 68, but he feels he could do better.
“I really haven’t gone very deep in any college tournaments,” said Robinson. “I shot a 70 and 66 in the first two rounds of the Georgia Amateur this summer, so I was leading that after the first two rounds. The lowest I’ve ever shot was a 63, but it wasn’t in a competitive round.”
Robinson is looking to better himself this year with a few changes. He feels that he is much more maturer this year and realizes that a National Championship is a reality.
“I want to play solid; I played really solid last year. I had top twenty finishes in ten out of twelve tournaments,” said Robinson. “I want to get a few more wins; I only won once last year. The fields we play in are really strong, so I hope to win a couple more times to help the team to fight for the National Championship. Last year I was easily down on myself. Now I think I realize more that a bad start in a golf round is not always such a bad thing; it just makes you work a little harder and get it back a little quicker.”
Head golf coach Jimmy Wilson has no returning seniors and only six returning juniors. Coach Wilson is looking at Robinson as one of those juniors to lead the team this year.
“David shows great leadership,” said Wilson. “He leads by example. He’s a good student and works really hard.”
Coach Wilson has made it possible for the younger players to really get a good chance to learn from the older players. When on road trips, Wilson will assign rooms with one older member of the team and one newer member of the team. The coaches’ hard work is met with much admiration by the players.
“I think the coaches here are great,” said Robinson. “He’s(Wilson) really upbeat, really gets the players to play well. We’ve got a new assistant coach this year named Bruce Kelly; he’s a good friend to all of us, and we really look up to him as well.”
For Robinson, his personal goals are just a part of the team’s goals. The golf team finished fifth in the National Championships last year.
“We’ve really got the whole team returning except one guy. We’ve got about four or five guys who are really fighting to get his spot,” said Robinson. “I don’t know about the rest of my team, but I’m looking at a National Championship, and that’s all I’m looking at. I think top five is a definite goal to have. I don’t think that there is any team out there that is better than us. We’ve just got to play good at the right times.”
