Black, Loushine lead bobcat runners

Over the weekend the Cross Country teams ran and did so in good fashion with J.R. Black and Bethany Loushine recording records for the Bobcats.

This weekend’s meet was in Massachusetts, and even though the weather was cold, none of the runners slowed down.

For the men, Black ran and ran until he recorded the sixth fastest time in school history. Which means that by himself, Black owns four top ten records and shares two more with other Georgia College & State University runners. His time of 28:28 was quick enough for a tenth place finish this week in Easton. Black’s performance was not good enough for the men’s team to make it in the top half of the nine-team field that made up the race.

Other GC&SU runners who had good finishes were Morgan Stallings and Will Hill. Stallings, who has been really good this year, finished in the 19th spot and recorded a time of 29:36. Hill, who came into the race looking for a good finish, got it when he finished 31st overall with a time of 30:57. Noah Sword finished fourth out of the GC&SU field and 45th in the race with a 32:10 performance. Finishing out the top five was Will Cleghorn; he ended up right behind Sword’s 46th place run, with his time being 32:15.

The winner of the meet was Stonehill College with a total of 28 points. Mario Fraioli, who finished first with a time of 26:56, led Stonehill College. The GC&SU men finished seventh out of the nine teams, while anticipating their next meet.

The girls had yet another record-breaking day on their hands when Loushine finished 28th overall. Her time of 20:55 went down in the record books for the GC&SU women runners. Loushine, who is just a freshman, has lead the team in the first four meets and now has captured the top three fastest times in just two short months here at GC&SU. With all of her success, the girl’s cross country team looks to have someone to build around in the upcoming seasons.

Loushine was not the only girl’s runner to have a good weekend. Karen Hjelmeland came in second among the Bobcats with a solid time of 22:05, while recording an overall finish of 38th place. Jamila Radford had a really good weekend when she finished 42nd with a time of 22:59. Kristina Tittle and Lilia Biktyakova rounded out the top five for the women when they finished 45th and 46th respectively by putting up times of 23:18 and 23:34.

Both the men and women will be back in action during the week when they travel to a meet in Augusta this Wednesday at Paine College. With all the excitement of this past weekend, the cross country teams are looking to run right by their competition.
