Vassielva serves to success
Kremena Vassileva is looking to be better the second time around for the Georgia College & State University’s Women’s Tennis Team.
Vassileva is from Plovdiv, Bulgaria. In 1998, she was the second best player on her team in Bulgaria, which competed on a regional and national level. The team placed third in the nation. Last year, she was a member of the Peach Belt Presidential Honor Roll. She finished with a 10-16 singles record and a 9-14 doubles record.
The women’s team finished 13th in the final National Rankings. Vassileva played in the fourth spot in the rotation last year for most of the tournaments. She is looking to move up in the rotation this season with two out of the top three players from last year graduating.
“My goals are to improve my record in singles and doubles and to have better communication on the court.” said Vassileva.
Communication on the tennis court is so important for the women. With many different nationalities coming from different foreign countries, they all need to understand each other and interact with each other, on and off the court.
“We’re just beginning, so right now we’re just communicating and finding common interest in each other,” said Vassileva.
The coaches are working very well with the girls. Head Coach Steve Barsby has a very good relationship with the athletes. He believes that through hard work and dedication, the girl’s team will get a top ten ranking this year in the National standings.
“The coaches here are great: they work as hard as we do. They are also very friendly and helpful.” said Vassileva.
With three new freshmen players this year, Vassileva finds herself in the role of a mentor to the younger players. While helping with the younger players, Vassileva has to be mindful of changes that she’d like to make to her performance from last year.
“I’m going to try not to be so hard on myself and think more positively about my game. I’m also improving my physical shape and my endurance,” said Vassileva.
The tennis team is looking to better it’s 18-7 record from last year and earn themselves a top ten National Ranking. With Vassileva and the young squad of new tennis phenoms, the GC&SU’s Women’s Tennis team is looking to do just that.
