USC has new constitution
The University Students Council introduced a new constitution during its biweekly meeting Wednesday.
During the last academic year, USC developed a committee to reconstruct and abolish some of the polices of the constitution.
Joey Villmez, President Pro-Temp of the Student Government Association amd the presiding officer of USC states that some of the polices stated in the constitution did not pertain to the current USC and its mission.
“There were a lot of things in the old constitution that did not apply to us,” Villmez said.
The new constitution now states that the Secretary/Treasurer will now be appointed by the chair of USC and approved by the governing body.
The constitution also did away with the student government liaison.
“We felt that it did not make sense to have a student government liaison since the main job served no importance to USC.”
This year’s USC mission above all is to serve as a conduit for Recognized Student Organizations.
“We are definitely hoping that this year’s USC will improve,” Villmez said. “We want to serve as a conduit to informing everyone on what other organizations are doing.”
USC has also implemented new programs that will help the council reach its mission.
Suzette W. Zompetti, assistant director of Student Activities and USC advisor, states that they eventually plan to implement an organization calendar that will keep all the organizations informed of their events.
“We would like to have an organization calendar for all of the student organizations.,” Zompetti said. “When an organization wants to plan a program, they can do so without conflicting with another programs.”
The organizational calendar will not only benefit the organizations but the students as well.
“If student organizations know in advance what everyone is doing, then students will not be forced to chose one event over the other,” Zompetti said. “We want to work together instead of in competition with each other.”
USC also plans to address current issues concerning Greek life.
“Currently there are no polices or procedures concerning Greek life affairs,” Zompetti said. “In the past there have been circumstances where Greek organizations may have been in situations where if we had a policy such acts could be prevented.
USC will eventually be creating a Center for Organization and Leadership Development or C.O.L.D.
“Under our current plans, C.O.L.D. will be placed in the old student activities office, room 116,” Zompetti said. “The office will hold two computers, two desks, a printer and a scanner.”
C.O.L.D. will serve as an office for USC.
“Not only will C.O.L.D. be for new organizations, but it will also contain information from leadership development to books and magazines,” Zompetti said.
“For the first time, under this new plan, USC will have a home,” Zompetti said.
This year’s USC hopes to benefit not only student organizations but also the students.
“USC is the council for all student organizations,” Zompetti said. “With Joey’s vision and my impute. I am certain that we will be able to meet all of our goals.”
