The Voice
People always label our generation, Generation X, as being apathetic and self-centered, but the students at GC&SU are anything but apathetic.
Our sororities and fraternities, as well as our clubs and other organizations, are often seen making a difference around the Milledgeville community. GC&SU even has a service sorority, Gamma Sigma Sigma.
With the recent tragedies in New York, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania, the true spirit of our generation has come into a clearer focus. The line outside of the Milledgeville Fire Department for last week’s blood drive was enormously long. There were even people being turned away because the Red Cross didn’t have enough bags for the blood. There were some students that waited in line for several hours just to give their blood for the cause and for their nation. Just the sheer number of students that turned out for last week’s Candlelight Vigil is something we can all be proud of. These don’t seem like the actions of an apathetic generation, do they?
Every year GC&SU students turn out en masse alongside the Milledgeville community to raise money for Relay for Life. They collect donations beforehand and walk all night to collect money for and to raise awareness about cancer.
And now GC&SU is continuing its `Think Pink Week.’ This week will promote awareness about breast cancer, which is something that touches everyone, not just the women who have it. This type of student-centered activity proves that GC&SU’s students are not thinking solely of themselves. They want to help their nation and their community.
During `Think Pink Week,’ there will be activities to educate students, faculty and staff about breast cancer. There will also be fundraisers to halp raise money for the American Cancer Society for cancer research. Donations will also be made to three students that are participating in the Avon 3-Day breast cancer walk.
The three students that are walking in the 3-Day will be honored with a special sending away ceremony, celebrating their efforts and to present the donations that were earned during the week.
GC&SU should be proud of all of the efforts that are going into raising awareness.
The Colonnade staff wants to thank all of the students at GC&SU for raising awareness about important issues and for showing support of our community. With this sort of involvement in the community, people will have to come up with a new label for our generation. We seem to have outgrown the last one.
