Intramural football kicks off new season
Intramurals at Georgia College and State University are already going strong with flag football, indoor volleyball, bowling and sports trivia, to name a few. This fall looks like it will be a great season.
Glenn Wilkins, coach of the Adam Angels flag football team, said, “Yeah, coaching’s not so bad, but wearing a light blue t-shirt is one of the hardest things I’ve had to deal with ever. There are times I cry myself to sleep at night. I may seek professional help. We’ve played three games and haven’t won one. which makes the blue t-shirt worse.”
All of the residence halls have teams, as well as several of the fraternities, sororities, and Christian organizations. There are also several teams that have been organized by students.
Warren Patrick, who plays for BSU, said, “It [playing] is a lot of fun, and you get good exercise. It’s a fun season.”
Jared Whitson, who plays for Sanford Hall’s team, The Steel Chickens, said, “I’m just trying to lose weight. Watch out for the Steel Chickens!”
As of Sept. 19, Sanford has lost all of the three games it has played.
“I like the competition; it satisfies my competitive appetite,” said Gena Folker, a freshman who plays for the BSU girl’s team. “It takes my mind off all my stupid tests.”
Lindsay Kerr, a fan of the games, has really enjoyed watching her friends play, “Jennifer Puckett (Goodie Gals) and Rachel Cummings (BSU) are the best flag football players ever. They ROCK!”
All of the games are played at Walter B. Williams Recreation Park on highway 22. The guy’s flag football teams play on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. The girls have their games on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
In last week’s action, Phi Mu beat Alpha Delta Pi 7-6 in the last five seconds of the game. The game was very intense, and the players were showing lots of emotion. The girl’s teams have been very competitive throughout all of the games. Also, defending school champion Down South Georgia Girls, scored two late touchdowns on Fly Girls to beat them 12-0. Every team played on Sept. 11, and the games seemed to rally the spirits of everyone who played or attended as a fan.
Sean Franton, a graduate assistant, said, “I would personally like to thank all the players and coaches for their cooperation. I would also like to thank my supervisors and officials for doing a great job! The games could not go on without you.”
Scott McCoy, the Intramural Coordinator, said, “I would like to send a special thanks to Sean Franton for his hard work and dedication to intramural sports.”
The women’s tournament begins Oct. 17, and the guys start Oct. 18. The Georgia Collegiate Flag Football Championships are Nov. 16 through 18,where one team from GC&SU will play at the University of Georgia in Athens. If anyone is interested in getting an Intramural Championship tee-shirt, which are guaranteed to be a collector’s item, they will be here in two weeks!
