GC&SU golf team comes out swinging
The Georgia College & State University golf team opened the 2001 season in a great way.
This team entered the 15 team field with good expectations and left wondering just how good this team could be. The fall season started out great for the GC&SU golf team, which finished in a tie for sixth place at the Carolina First Intercollegiate Tournament. The Bobcats fired rounds of 293 and 292 to finish with a two-day total of 585. To top off the good start, the Bobcats finished the best out of any of the three NCAA Division II playing on Monday and Tuesday. The other twelve schools were NCAA I institutions. UNC Wilmington won the tournament with a two-round score of 574.
“I am very pleased with how the team playe;, we beat Francis Marion for the first time ever and beat Columbus by 16,” said Coach Jimmy Wilson. “We are now getting ready for the next tournament.”
Furman’s Matt Davidson was the tournament low medallist after shooting rounds of 70 and 68 on the par 72 course for a six-under, two-day score of 138. For the Bobcats, David Robinson showed just how good he is by leading the Bobcats with rounds of 73 and 70 for a one-under-par 143 to finish tied for tenth place.
The Bobcats also got good play from Bubba Gwyn, who tied for 19th with two rounds of 72 and 73 for a one-over-par two-day total of 145. T.J. Gibson finished right behind Gwyn with a two-day total of 146 with two rounds of 71 and 75. Jose Martinez Medrano rounded out the top four for the Bobcats with a 151 after shooting rounds of 77 and 74.
With such a good start to the season, look out for GC&SU’s, golf team. All of players seem to be in mid-season form already, which could mean big things for the other teams in Peach Belt Conference.
The next tournament for the Bobcats will be on Oct. 7 through 9 when they travel to Clinton, SC, for the Presbyterian College Invitational.
