`Corinthian’ makes debut
Georgia College & State University held a reception Wednesday honoring the authors of the published journal, The Corinthian.
The Corinthian is a journal of student research started three years ago as a chance to showcase the works of students.
Dr. Amy Burt, professor of Speech Communications, is the editor of The Corinthian.
“It is easy to see the results of product based classes, ” said Burt. “For example you are in an art class and at the end of the semester you have a finished painting. Too often the works of students in classes go unheard.”
The journal publishes high quality articles composed by GC&SU students. The Corinthian is an opportunity for students to publish research during their undergraduate years.
“Student’s send in their final papers from a semesters class,” said Burt. “A faculty member then sponsors the student, and the paper is presented to a reviewer who looks over the information to verify that it is a good example within that discipline.”
Dr. Robin Harris, director of Experiential Learning, works with Burt on undergraduate research.
“The Corinthian gives undergraduates the opportunity to publish research, whether it is an independent paper or for class,” Harris said. “We are working very diligently to increase the amount of student research on our campus.”
Michelle Lynn, a former special education major, was one of the authors whose research was featured in The Corinthian this years.
“My topic is on how exercise effects adolescents with attention defcicit,” said Lynn. “It took about one year and a half to complete the research.”
President Rosemary DePaolo is pleased with the outcome of The Corinthian.
“I am terribly pleased on how this has evolved,” said DePaolo. “It is a wonderful representation of student involvement at this university.”
