The Voice

A week and a half later, we still tune in every night to the news and find constant information about “The Attack on America.” We also see the struggle our fellow citizens in New York and Washington, D.C. are going through, and our hearts and prayers go out to them and their families. So, as Americans, we look above to a higher power for consolation and guidance in a time of great tragedy.

Religion is defined as the service and worship of God, or the supernatural, and as a commitment or devotion to religious faith or observance. Faith in God has been around since the beginning of time, and it seems that everyone has his or her own views on which domination is right.

The students of Georgia College & State University have over five religious organizations here on campus that provide opportunities for Christian and spiritual involvement. They are BSU (Baptist Student Union), Campus Outreach, The Wesley Foundation Campus Ministry, Kappa Upsilon Chi, and Life Collation.

Although each of these organizations are affiliated with particular denominations, they are open to students of all religious backgrounds. They do not discriminate against anyone. With this current tragedy in America, each organization has complimented the other by providing support for students and the nation with prayer meetings and worship services.

Due to the recent tragedy, there is a heightened awareness of religion on campus, which the Colonnade would like to address. We feel it should be on campus. GC&SU’s students need to have somewhere to turn to ease their minds and their spirits; for some people, religion is a very important part of life.

Because religion is prevalent on campus, it provides a counterbalance to the many bars downtown. It also helps incoming students find friends that have similar values and beliefs. Religious organizations provide surrogate families for students who are away from home.

But with such a diverse population of students, including students from other countries, GC&SU needs organizations to meet the needs of every student. The majority of our religious organizations are Christian; it is up to the students of GC&SU to start organizations of other faiths on campus.

However, there is confusion as to why there are so many religious organizations on campus when they all seem to have one central belief: God. Maybe there are so many organizations because they all have different ways of praising God; Life coalition, for example, worships God primarily through music.

To find more information about these organizations, such as meeting times and contact information, check out the student activities portion of the GC&SU website at www.gcsu.edu/student_affairs/Cocurricular/ or go to Student Affairs, which is located below the cafeteria on the ground floor of MSU.
