One nation under God…

Campus Outreach started to minister to students at Georgia College & State University about 10 years ago and has grown to be one of the largest Christian organizations on campus.

Campus Outreach is a regionally based organization with a goal to “help college students know Jesus Christ personally.”

“We want those who are already Christians to know God better, and hopefully from that they will go out and share that love with other people,” Glen Wilkins, a full-time staff member of Campus Outreach, said.

Campus Outreach has about 200 to 275 people that attend their Wednesday night service, which is now being held in Arts & Sciences Auditorium.

“We don’t have a membership, so to speak; there are no fees or registration forms. We are open to anyone,” Wilkins said.

As a Christian organization on campus, they have a goal and a specific function that they try to perform on a regular basis.

“We are all about discipleship, life on life. What we are based around is the idea that if I help a student to know Christ deeper, hopefully he will be able to do that with other people and they will in turn do the same with other people,” Wilkins said.

The way that Campus Outreach goes about doing this function is through small Bible study groups, a Christmas conference, a flag football tournament, their Wednesday night meeting called One eighty, a winter retreat, and Summer Beach Project in Daytona Beach, Florida. Summer Beach Project is a missions and discipleship opportunity for the four colleges that are supported by their parent church. About 100 people go to Daytona Beach, Florida and take on full-time jobs for ten weeks.

Campus Outreach is locally supported by Covenant Presbyterian church, which is located on Columbia Street. The Sunday night prayer sessions are held at 521 West Thomas Street, right next to Covenant Presbyterian.

When speaking about the future, Glen Wilkins has high hopes for what he would like to see and hopes to see happen with Campus Outreach.

“I would like to see guys that are younger grow to love Christ more and more. I hope that college students will realize that Jesus Christ is who he claimed to be. I think every college student is searching for answers; a lot of those answers are in the Bible, like in John 10:10,” Wilkins said.

As for their individual role on campus, Wilkins sees not much of a distinction between Campus Outreach and other organizations.

“I think we are all unique, in that we have different roles, but we are all unified in helping college students know God. BSU, Wesley foundation, we are all doing the same thing. The only thing that really sets us apart is the night we meet and our names,” Wilkins said.

“I would like everyone to come to our Wednesday night meeting, and hopefully find the plan that he has for them through worship and through verses such as Jeremiah 29:11,” Wilkins said.
