The Tangled Web

The tragedy that occurred on Tuesday has left all of us in shock to say the least. Most people, myself included, never really believed that such an act of terrorism could occur on American soil. Now we are being tested.

My first reaction to the story was one of shock and disbelief, followed closely by panic. My father is a pilot and the first call I made was to make sure that he was NOT flying this week. I can only thank God that he was on vacation.

The bombing is being called this generation’s Pearl Harbor because of the magnitude and scale of it. There has never been so large a blow dealt to America since that “day which will live in infamy.” Even though I know that such a deed should not go unpunished, President Bush needs to be careful in how he handles the aftermath.

The nation cannot go off “half cocked” as it were, just to exact revenge. Such blind action will not avenge the deaths of those who fell victim to this tragedy. Instead, more innocent lives will be lost and there is a possibility that war may follow.

Now to look at things from a local standpoint. One concern that has been brought to my attention is the well being of the international students here at GC&SU. There are those that believe that there will be some type of retaliation on the international students because they are “outsiders.”

Trust me when I say that they are as shocked and apalled by what happened as everyone else in this nation. There are some from countries that deal with attrocities such as this every day. If anything, we should look to them for advice on how to handle this situation, both physically and emotionally. Too many times has the wisdom of those around us been overlooked.
