Series offers great art films

Any student interested in viewing art films should check out the Great Cinema Series at Georgia College & State University.

The Great Cinema Series is a free, educational series of informative discussion and viewing of art films on a big screen, hosted by GC&SU faculty. Monthly screenings are on Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. in the Arts & Sciences Auditorium.

Students who are used to viewing the films should take note that the films are no longer on the first Friday of every month. The 2000-2001 season of GC&SU’s Great Cinema Series will begin Thursday, September 20.

On one Thursday every month, the series will show an art film–independents, foreign films, classics–with a brief informative talk by one of the faculty. All films are open and free. The exact dates for the entire season are listed below. The dates can also be found on posters around the school and on the GC&SU info web page.

The first film, which will be shown on September 20, is an early Coen brothers classic: “Blood Simple.”

Dr. Jane Rose, a member of the faculty committee that hosts the series, said, “If you have appreciated the Coen brothers’ off-beat films like `Raising Arizona,’ `Fargo,’ and `Oh Brother, Where Art Thou,’ then you will want to see their treatment of the film noir style in `Blood Simple.’”

Those interested need to remember to come and view the films starting this month. Check The Colonnade each month for descriptions of the films following “Blood Simple.” Below is a list of films to check out, and remember all viewings are free, so come by and give them a try.
