RHA in full swing

The Residence Hall Association (RHA) is holding its officer training today and then will be leaving to go to the State Leadership Conference in Statesboro this weekend.

RHA represents the over 1,000 resident students at Georgia College & State University and their concerns dealing with housing. Any resident student can be a part of this organization and is encouraged to join a committee.

This year the president is Amber Thrasher; the vice-president is Michelle Gibson; the secretary is Jennifer Armenia; the treasurer is Gary Caldwell; and the national communications coordinator is Tara Schroeder.

“We are continuing to strive to make living on campus a fun and memorable experience,” said Amber Thrasher, president of RHA.

There are six different committees students can choose to join. The Community Service committee works on projects throughout the year such as Habitat for Humanity, canned food drives and Relay for Life. RHA is the recipient of the Golden Hammer Award from Habitat for Humanity for being the organization that served the most hours.

The Policy Review Committee examines policies that students want changed and brings them in front of the group. The Board of Directors is a committee where representatives from each residence hall meet with Sodexho representatives and discuss food and dining hall issues. The Public Relations Committee informs students on what they need to know about upcoming meetings and events.

With the new housing plans starting, there is a focus on the New Housing Task Force, which is made up of representatives from each hall that will give input on plans being made for the upcoming years. The Programming Board of RHA works with event planning and co-sponsorships.

“RHA has gotten off to a really good start,” said Sherolyn Hopkins, the RHA adviser. “Our goal is to get more student involvement and have the committees do more stuff.”

RHA meets twice a month to discuss plans for the organization. The officers and members must approve any program, survey or undertaking that RHA members introduce. The next meeting will be Sept. 19 in Bell Hall at 8:30 p.m. All resident students are invited to attend.

“RHA is the voice of the Residence Halls,” said Hopkins. “It’s a good opportunity for students to do something and to build leadership skills.”

For more information about the Residence Hall Association, students can contact their Resident Director or Resident Assistant. Students can also view the RHA web site at www.gcsu.edu/student_affairs/res_life/rha/default.htm or email them at gcsurha@bobcat.gcsu.edu.
