Pettersson tops line-up
Mikael Pettersson starts his second year with GC&SU’s tennis team after a successful first year.
Pettersson is a sophomore. He was a member of the Peach Belt Presidential Honor Roll last year; he also won the district and division II tournament in Sweden. Last year, his singles record was 10-12, and his doubles record was 8-13.
“I think he works hard, and I feel that his record will be better this
year,” said Steve Barsby, the tennis team coach.
Pettersson played in a tennis club throughout high school. He started playing tennis when he was 8 years old.
“We don’t have school teams in Sweden, like here,” said Pettersson. “I decided to go here so I could play and go to college at the same time.”
A few new guys have been added to the tennis team since their number 1 player left. Last year, Pettersson was ranked number 3 on the team.
“It was tough in the beginning, because I wasn’t used to the heat,” said Pettersson. “I worked my way through and won some tough matches. I think I’m satisfied with last year.”
Pettersson aspires to stay in the top of the line-up for the team.
“I want to win at least 50% of my matches this year,” said Pettersson. “I depend on myself to win, because I like to win. I hope the team will make it to the nationals this year.”
“He will play in the top part of our line-up this year. I am hoping that he can improve a little on his record,” said Barsby. “The team placed 30th in the nation, last year. I would like to get into the low 20s or high teens, which would be a major improvement from our performance last year. It will take a lot of hard work and the guys coming together in the spring; Mikael will be a big contributor to our team’s placement this year.”
