Creative Writing now a new major in A&S

Creative writing, previously offered as a minor, has been added to the list of majors offered here at Georgia College & State University.

“Creative writing is a discipline that has grown by leaps and bounds in the last several decades. The Associated Writer’s Program (which Marty Lammon is now president of) is a national organization devoted to these programs, and writers outside the Academy come together to share readings, workshops and panels,” said Dr. Kellie Wells, assistant professor of English.

The requirements for any person interested in studying creative writing can be found in the GC&SU academic catalog (Areas A-E, under the Core section of the catalog).

There are many job opportunities for students who major in creative writing, which will be increased by the recent addition of the Master of Fine Arts degree. With this degree, one can become a professor of creative writing, work for a publishing company, or become a book editor, and the opportunities continue to grow.

” The creative writing students here are very committed, engaged and wonderful writers. We couldn’t ask for more in that regard. We have just begun a Master of Fine Arts program in creative writing, and so we hope their presence here will keep the standards high and make the experience all the richer for the undergraduate students majoring in Creative Writing,” said Wells.

There are many opportunities for all students to engage in learning more about writing through programs such as The Fault Line Reading Series, the Literary Guild and The Peacock’s Feet, which is a literary journal run by students.

“One of the appeals of our program for students is the fact that, even as freshman, students can meet and work with well-known writers,” said Wells.

GC&SU has many writing classes for every genre of writing, such as intro, intermediate and poetry creative writing classes, fiction workshops, senior seminar, creative nonfiction workshop, playwriting workshop and a translation class.

“As a writer, I take pride that GC&SU validates creativity and expression. I think it’s wonderful that creative writing has been added as a major,” said India Barfield, a student here at GC&SU.

If you are interested in this program, contact Wells (in the English department,) or Marty Lammon, Director of the Program, both located in the English department.
