Park here or there
Do you feel as if there is nowhere to park? There is always somewhere to park but maybe just not at your convenience. So the real question is, would you rather get a ticket or walk those few extra blocks?
All students, faculty, staff and visitors who park a motor vehicle on campus must have one of the three parking permits. These permits include type A, B, or C and must be seen at all times.
Parker Petrea, a freshman at GC&SU, has trouble finding a parking space close to his resident hall.
“You can never get the same good parking space twice,” said Petrea.
11 sworn officers are responsible for the protection of university personnel, visitors, property, and for the administration of parking policies and procedures. The GC&SU Department of Public Safety is under the direction of Chief Ken Vance. The question most frequently talked about is, is there enough parking?
“Convenient parking? No, but there are enough parking spaces if everybody does not show up at once,” said Vance. “I understand students’ frustrations and know that it is difficult at the first of the year.”
Sean Baldwin, a senior at GC&SU, commutes from Macon to his classes.
“It is hard trying to find a parking space during the day,” said Baldwin. “With the library under construction, this causes some parking spaces not to be available for parking.”
GC&SU currently provides a shuttle bus that runs from Centennial Center to main campus from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“I wish the shuttle bus would be used more,” said Vance “This would cause less confusion in the parking situation.”
‘To protect and Serve.’ Do you feel that is the case when you receive a parking ticket? Stephanie Jackson, a freshman at GC&SU, has received two parking tickets in the course of two weeks. She was not happy, but the tickets were $15 each, which was no cause for worries.
Although, $15 is the minimum parking ticket, drivers can also receive a maximum fine of $50. This ticket would be due to parking in a handicap space. So, look before parking.
The way to avoid parking citations is to be familiar with all of the parking lots on campus, have a properly displayed parking permit and never park in a tow zone. Avoid those few things, and Chief Vance can probably be avoided all year.
