GC&SU G.I.V.E. Center keeps giving

One department on campus knows the meaning of giving. The G.I.V.E. (Georgia College & State University Involved in Volunteer Efforts) Center not only gives to the campus and community but also recognizes others who do so.

“I feel like recognization of others is important because everyone likes to do be recognized for a job well done or for going beyond the call of duty,” said Kendall Stiles, the Director of the GIVE Center. “Most people don’t do things to be recognized, but it sure is nice to be recognized for things you have done. Recognition is also a form of motivation for some. You will be surprised what a lifesaver, a mint, a pack of `extra’ gum, or a pack of M&M’s can do for someone’s morale.”

This month begins the kick-off to Champion of the Month, a recognition program based off of the Employee of the Month concept that awards volunteers who have gone beyond the call of duty in volunteer efforts. Students, faculty, and staff can nominate their peers who have done an outstanding job serving their community. A selection committee reviews nominations and the individual awarded will be spotlighted by the G.I.V.E. Center. The recipient also receives recognition at the semester awards program, Cheers to Volunteers. Sponsored by Brusters, the Champion of the Month will also receive a coupon for free ice cream.

Any person who would like to pick up a nomination form can do so at the G.I.V.E. Center, located in Ennis Hall on the first floor. Forms are due at the end of each month, and winners will be announced at the G.I.V.E.’rs meeting on the first Wednesday of the month.

In other G.I.V.E. Center news, members of the G.I.V.E. Center staff will be presenting their ideas and recognition programs to representatives from colleges around the state at a conference in Macon this month. Entitled “Recognizing Our Local Heroes,” the presentation details how volunteer recognition is important and how it can be done easily. The staff has already presented this program twice in the past year and hopes to reach a bigger audience in Macon.

“I believe that most people don’t really know how to recognize or appreciate others because they have not been recognized themselves. Why not take a moment to say `thank you,’ `great job,’ or `I appreciate what you have done for others and myself.’ I know that we are all busy, but we should all take time to recognize someone. You will be surprised at what will happen,” said Stiles about doing recognition. “This is one of my favorite parts of my job,as well as one of my favorite past times. I don’t just do it as a part of my job. It is a part of my life. It is everyone’s responsibility to appreciate and recognize others.”

Stiles is in the process of laying out her book S.M.O.R.E.’S (Sharing Moments of Recognition Everyday), which describes many of the recognition ideas her office uses.

“The main purpose of this book is to give individuals ideas and suggestions on how to recognize or appreciate others as well as to let them know that recognition and appreciation doesn’t have to be costly, extravagant, or take a lot of time. However, it does have to come from the heart and be sincere,” said Stiles. “The book is based on Mother Theresa’s quote, `humans hunger for more appreciation and love than they do for bread or food.’”

“I would like to challenge everyone to recognize someone for something they have done,” said Stiles. “What a better place this world would be if more people were recognized and appreciated.”
