Gamma Sigma Sigma gains national recognition – twice

Gamma Sigma Sigma, Georgia College and State University’s reigning Dean’s Cup Champion, was recently bestowed with two national honors.

President Jessica Roman and Parliamentarian Melissa Lawrence accepted the National Service Merit Award and the Spirit of Gamma Sigma Sigma Award on behalf of the entire chapter.

“When they called out Zeta Omicron [GC&SU's local chapter], I was shocked. I am very excited and pleased because we have worked extremely hard over the past two years to serve the GC&SU campus and the Milledgeville community,” said Roman.

All chapters of Gamma Sigma Sigma met in July to discuss upcoming service impact areas and by-law changes, as well as to reward chapters who did outstanding work over the past two years. The National Convention also gave chapters an opportunity to discuss individual service projects and other ideas.

The National Service Merit Award is rewarded to the three chapters in the nation who have been instrumental in organizing and carrying out a specific service project. More specially, the Zeta Omicron Chapter of GC&SU was recognized for their efforts and participation in Baldwin County’s Relay for Life. For the past three years, Gamma Sigma Sigma has been the college organization that raised the most money for this community service project. The co-ed, community service sorority co-sponsored the 2001 Relay for Life while raising over $4000.00 for the American Cancer Society.

“I feel very proud that Gamma Sigma Sigma received this national recognition. Our main purpose is to do service. To be recognized for something that we love doing, Relay for Life, is an honor,” said Kim Benfield, Service Vice-President.

The Spirit of Gamma Sigma Sigma Award is designed to distinguish chapters, which consistently exhibit Gamma Sigma Sigma’s overall purpose. Gamma Sigma Sigma is based on the ideals of service, friendship, and equality. Its purpose is to “assemble college and university students in the spirit of service to humanity and to develop friendship among students of all races and creeds.”

“I was very excited to find out we had won these awards at the convention,” said Lawrence. “I knew our members had worked so hard to serve the community and others, but I was enamoured with joy to find out we had actually been recognized. The great group of girls and guys we have put together made a difference, and it was noticed by thousands.”

Gamma Sigma Sigma plans to continue its work with Relay for Life this school year. Other main impact and spotlight areas for the next two years include diabetes, health and nutrition, and hunger and homelessness. The Zeta Omicron chapter will hold rush for all interested students during the week of September 10. The week will conclude with a formal pledge pinning ceremony on Sunday, September 16 at 8 p.m. in the MSU Lounge.
