From the Bleachers

Over the Labor Day weekend, which I am sure everyone enjoyed, college football started for what looks to be another exciting year in pigskin fun. This year many questions will have to be answered, like who will be the champ and who will be this season’s big surprise? Every year Georgia and Georgia Tech play, and everyone gets really excited for those two teams. But locally, the question is asked: when, if ever, will Georgia College & State University get a football team?

We know that college football is a success that almost every school enjoys, yet it is something we are missing out on. How exciting would it be to wake up early on a Saturday morning, pick up some buddies, and watch some great college football in the town of Milledgeville? Week in and week out most of us watch UGA or GT, and wonder if GC&SU is taking any positive steps toward actually getting a football team.

I feel the answer is yes, and with enough student involvement, people will start to notice that something must change. I am all for a school football team, which to me is a tradition that should not be missed. Please do not think I am putting down the school, because the other sports teams are very good at all times. Also, this campus is very active in all the sororities, fraternities, and other campus activities that make GC&SU so much fun. But football is something that is such a pleasure in college; some people will choose what college they go to depending on how good their football team is. So, where does that leave us?

One problem that the school could have with getting a football team is where in the world can we get the money? Realistically, we would have to buy a place for a stadium, football gear (helmets, pads, all the things needed to practice with), and a coaching staff.

So, money would be tight, but the school could increase the tuition. And yes, I know the school just did that, but this would be for the school’s best benefit. If the school wanted to go another direction with the football idea, then maybe we could look into the possibility of a few fund-raisers to get something started in bringing college football to GC&SU.

I agree that money could be a problem, and many students would not want to see tution rasied again. Then what are some things as students we can do to hurry the process of getting a football team? A lot of great memories could come from the bobcats getting a football team. We could have a great homecoming–not to say it is not fantastic now–but the representatives could walk onto the 50-yard line with tons of screaming fans yelling at the top of their lungs. Think about how sensational that would be.

I would like your opinion on this. So, if you want, you can come by the Colonnade office and tell me what you think. Or, if I am not in the office, leave a note on my desk and tell me how you feel on the given topic. If a trip to The Colonnade office does not fit into your schedule, then you can always e-mail me at www.gcsunade.com.
