Christian Fraternity coming on campus

The face of a new fraternity is developing on the campus of Georgia College & State University.

Kappa Upsilon Chi, a Christian, Greek fraternity, is initiating its founding members and pinning pledges this weekend. The president, Marc Thompson, decided to start the fraternity for personal reasons as well as wanting to allow other students to have the experience.

“I wanted there to be another type of ministry on campus,” said Thompson. “I want everyone to see that there is a Greek fraternity that can be Christian and stick to their morals.”

Thompson has been involved in other Christian organizations on campus, but he thinks this is different.

“Being involved helped me in my (Christian) walk, but the relationships aren’t lasting. With Kappa Upsilon Chi, I have a better chance of life-long friendships, because we are bonded together as brothers,” said Thompson.

It took a little convincing to get Kelly Pugh, the internal vice president, involved.

“I started out being skeptical; I thought, `oh no, I don’t want a fraternity.’ But as Marc talked more about it, I realized it is more of a Christian brotherhood,” said Pugh.

Kappa Upsilon Chi originated at Texas Tech University. This is the fourth chapter to be established and the first chapter outside of the state of Texas.

“I researched Christian fraternities on the Internet, and this one responded and was very helpful,” said Thompson. “The Board of directors has been a constant help and a wonderful influence.”

Some of the activities included in the fraternity are a weekly accountability group, weekly meetings, service projects and retreats.

The weekly accountability group is a time for the members to come together and discuss issues that they are having. The brothers will spend time listening to each other and sharing ideas about how deal with the situations.

Pugh believes the accountability group will be beneficial.

“For a guy being away from home for the first time, it is good to have a group that he can turn to,” said Pugh.
