Campus Activities Board selected for 2001-2002
A new process for the selection of the executive board of Georgia College & State University’s Campus Activities Board was brought into effect this year.
The executive board is composed of the Director, the Assistant Director of Administration and the Assistant Director of Public Relations & Recruitment. The students filling these positions were announced Wednesday.
Mary-Elizabeth Watson, a sophomore majoring in art, will serve as the 2001-2002 Director. The Assistant Director for Relations & Recruitment is Gloria Lima, a sophomore majoring in psychology and Spanish. The Assistant Director for Administration is June Chennault, who is a Freshman political science major.
Candidates for the three executive positions had to complete an application, get a letter of recommendation from a faculty or staff member, acquire 60 signatures, answer an essay question, and submit a leadership resume. In addition to this, applicants went through an interview with Eddie Howard, Director of Student Activities, and Suzette Zompetti, Assistant Director of Student Activities and the advisor of CAB.
“As soon as everyone’s in place we will be going on a planning and training retreat. It is there that we will set goals for the year and really put into place what CAB wants to be this year and what it wants to accomplish. Then the committee chairs will set goals for their committees based on how they fit into the big CAB picture.” Zompetti replied, “I’m also looking for CAB to embrace this new structure. This will provide a base from which we can seek future CAB leaders.”
The Campus Activities Board is the official programming board for GC&SU and is responsible for bringing entertainment such as comedians, lecturers, musicians, novelty acts and much more,to the campus. Student involvement in CAB is encouraged, and Deans Cup Points are given for attending meetings and selected events.
“Their [the students'] activity money goes to fund the activities and events CAB brings to campus. We want them to be involved in the decision making for those events by joining a committee. ” Zompetti said, “I am excited about the new changes and look forward to supporting the organization 110 percent.”
Last spring the Student Activities Budget Committee (SABC) cut the budget of the programming board. The reason given was for CAB to restructure itself to represent a larger percentage of the student body.
“CAB really needs to prove itself this year. If we can get things going with the new board structure, then there will be another phase put into place next year.” Zompetti commented, “We will institute a representative component where different populations/major student organization will have a voice on the board.”
The deadline for committee chairs has been extended to September 10. Anyone interested in applying can pick up applications from the Student Activities Office.
